Under 16s Keep Right On!

On Saturday 3rd of February, our U16 grassroots Junior Blues team travelled to Norwich to play their quarter final of the JPL Shield Knockout against International Talent FC.

This was an exciting day for all involved and the journey to this fixture had seen the team win 4-1 against Solihull Academy and 7- 1 against Stafford Rangers 7-1.

It was an early start with an 8.30 pick-up from St. Andrew’s but there was a distinct buzz of excitement and anticipation from players and parents as they boarded the coach. It was an experience like none other, for these young budding footballers and one that no-one wanted to miss! Everyone was in high spirits and the 3-hour journey was the perfect opportunity to discuss tactics and remind the players of what to expect from their opposition.

On arrival at Ketts Park, and after a leg stretch, there was plenty of time to spare so the team set off to the changing rooms to get in some extra preparation in before the big match kicked off.

Before the game, spirits were high, all the young players wanting to give it their all and knowing that their hard work could pay off to overcome this tough opposition.

Within 5 minutes of kick off, we were on top of the game with centre midfielder Jacob hitting the bar from close range, after a drilled ball across by U16’s striker, Roman. The team didn’t have to wait long and after 13 minutes, attacking midfielder, Layton, put the team in front 1-0 up with an outstanding improvised volley into the top corner.

The team rallied together and pushed on and worked hard to get to half time at 1-0 up. Throughout the second half, the team fought, battled and left everything out on the field. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be as they lost the lead late into the second half, conceding two within the space of 10 minutes, but immediately pegging back to level up at 2-2 with just under 10 minutes to play. However, the fairytale was to come to an end when International Talent FC, scored a late winner in the last minute to crush all dreams.

A bitter end to this cup run which has been a memorable one but not even a defeat could crush the enjoyment of the whole experience. However, the lads held their heads up high regardless of the result, feeling hard done by, but with the motivation and belief that they can now go on and win the league. A long day, but an incredible experience for our U16s Junior Blues team.
